Each of us carries a device in our pocket that grants access to virtually unlimited information. Searching for medical information has become quick and effortless. Whether we're dealing with a mild headache, a complex chronic condition, or general health anxiety, most of us instinctively turn to search engines and social media. But that convenience comes at a price: the internet is saturated with inaccurate, misleading, and manipulative medical content. The World Health Organization (WHO) has dubbed this dangerous phenomenon an "Infodemic" — an epidemic of information, much of it composed of conspiracy theories, outright lies, and empty promises.
The tragic story of Paloma Semaan, a 23-year-old who died after refusing chemotherapy for a curable cancer, is a painful and concrete reminder of the dangers lurking online. Paloma had lost faith in mainstream medicine due to various conspiracies she had read on social media and heard from her own mother. Her case proves that medical disinformation is not merely a virtual nuisance — it costs human lives.
The spread of false information is not a new phenomenon, but in the past it was largely confined to small fringe groups. Today, social networks such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook effectively function as public health platforms — yet with no regulation or scientific oversight whatsoever.
The core problem lies in how social media algorithms are designed. The algorithm does not prioritize clinical accuracy or scientific truth; it prioritizes virality, engagement, and emotional resonance. False information spreads faster than facts because it typically relies on emotionally charged personal stories rather than dry, complex scientific literature.
It is important to distinguish between two key terms: "misinformation" — incorrect information shared in good faith by people who genuinely believe it — and "disinformation" — deliberately fabricated and distributed false content intended to deceive, generate profit, or advance a political agenda.
Influencers and content creators exploit well-documented cognitive biases of the human mind. When people are anxious about their health, they tend to grasp at hope and any miracle solution on offer. Social networks also create "echo chambers" — closed environments where users are exposed only to content that reinforces their existing beliefs. Someone who watches one video questioning the efficacy of a particular medication will quickly be flooded with thousands of similar videos, creating the illusion of "consensus" around a complete falsehood.
The natural question is: why do influencers and ordinary people invest so much effort in creating and spreading false medical content? The answer is complex and involves several personal and systemic factors:
Financial gain and the commercialization of health: The most common motive is money. The wellness and natural health industry generates billions of dollars. Many influencers cast doubt on modern medicine solely to sell expensive alternatives: useless dietary supplements, "detox" teas, private consulting packages, or books. Discrediting conventional medicine is essentially a marketing strategy designed to create dependency on their own products.
The "attention economy": On social media, credibility is often measured in follower counts and likes rather than medical credentials. Dramatic, extreme, and conspiratorial content attracts enormous exposure, bringing influencers status, fame, and business opportunities.
Politics and social polarization: Health topics have become political weapons. Political groups sometimes weaponize disinformation to erode public trust in state institutions (such as health ministries or the WHO), framing opposition to medical guidelines as an act of activism and personal freedom.
Distorted identity and autonomy: Social pressure to project a healthy and "perfect" body online has turned health management into a kind of performance. Within certain online communities, rejecting medical treatment (such as refusing chemotherapy) is paradoxically presented as female or personal empowerment — a rebellion against a system perceived as corrupt and broken.
To understand the power of disinformation, it is worth examining some of the most prominent and dangerous medical conspiracies that have spread in recent years:
1. The Miracle Mineral Supplement (MMS):
One of the most disturbing conspiracies involves a substance marketed under the name MMS. This product was promoted online as a "miracle cure" for autism and cancer, and during the pandemic, for COVID-19 as well. In reality, it is a mixture of sodium chlorite, water, and acid that together form chlorine dioxide — an industrial chemical used to bleach textiles and disinfect sewage, essentially equivalent to industrial bleach. Desperate parents of children on the autism spectrum purchased the substance on social media and administered it to their children, leading to severe poisoning, kidney failure, and life-threatening situations. Those behind the MMS industry were even sentenced to prison in the United States for marketing toxic chemicals as medicine.
2. The conspiracy against chemotherapy and the "Big Pharma scam":
A particularly widespread and deadly narrative among health influencers and conspiracy promoters holds that chemotherapy is actually a "scam" and a poison created by "Big Pharma" to generate profit, and that it kills more people than cancer itself. The theory claims that mainstream medicine is "hiding" the real cure for cancer. This anti-scientific rhetoric persuades vulnerable and anxious patients to abandon life-saving treatments in favor of baseless alternatives such as coffee enemas, juices, or essential oils.

3. Microchips and fertility damage — the COVID-19 infodemic:
The COVID-19 pandemic provided unprecedented fertile ground for medical conspiracy theories. These ranged from false rumors that 5G technology causes the virus to spread, to claims that vaccines contain tracking chips or cause infertility. These rumors led to a significant decline in vaccine uptake and widespread preventable deaths, while severely damaging public trust in healthcare professionals.
The rise of artificial intelligence has made producing medical disinformation easier, faster, and cheaper than ever before. Today, anyone with free access to text and image generators can produce lengthy, convincing, and pseudo-scientific medical articles within minutes — complete with photorealistic images of "patients" who supposedly recovered from incurable diseases. The ability of these systems to write in authoritative, high-register language further blurs the line between research-based facts and half-truths.
The most significant escalation is felt in the video domain, particularly through the phenomenon of deepfakes. Fraudsters and commercial actors use advanced tools to create digital personas of doctors, or worse, to literally "clone" the faces and voices of real, well-known physicians and researchers without their knowledge. These videos, distributed en masse on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, show these "expert doctors" recommending expensive supplements or warning against prescription medications.
In late 2025, for example, a network of hundreds of fake videos was exposed. In one case, deepfake videos were created replicating the likeness of Prof. David Taylor-Robinson of the University of Liverpool. Although the professor's actual field is pediatrics, his "digital twin" was shown in videos recommending that menopausal women purchase an herbal supplement. The fake version of the doctor even invented a completely fictitious symptom called "Thermometer leg". The videos were convincing enough that many women purchased the useless product, while the real professor had no idea his identity had been stolen for a medical fraud scheme.
As consumers of content, how can we tell when someone is trying to sell us misinformation and lies? There are five prominent red flags to watch out for:
1. Use of fear tactics: Trustworthy articles use respectful, measured, and calm language aimed at explaining and making information accessible. In contrast, false articles try to generate panic. Headlines like "Your doctor won't tell you this!" or "The one ingredient that's slowly killing you!" are designed to trigger your anxiety, not to protect your health. Anxiety makes us less skeptical and more likely to believe anything that promises quick relief.
2. Total dismissal of the medical and scientific community: It is legitimate to be critical and to ask questions about drug side effects. But if content claims that the entire medical community, scientists, and research universities are lying or acting as part of a malicious international conspiracy — that is a glaring red flag. Evidence-based medicine advances inch by inch through lengthy studies, and doctors are professionals bound by their oath. Anyone claiming to be the only one who knows the "hidden truth" is usually trying to deceive you.
3. Absence of credible sources: A quality medical article will always cite its sources, linking to studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals or to websites of universities and official health organizations (typically with .edu or .org domains). If the author only links to their own other posts, anonymous TikTok videos, or personal blog opinions — the information is likely unfounded.
4. Promises of "miracle cures" or instant "magic solutions": Real medicine and human physiology are complex. If an article promises that a single type of fruit, one dietary supplement, or a specific habit will "heal your gut overnight" or "melt fat within days" — be very skeptical. Treating medical issues almost always requires time, consistency, and often a multi-system approach that includes professional medical guidance.
5. A blatant attempt to sell you something: Unbiased health advice should not end with a payment link at the checkout. If an article or video ends with an aggressive recommendation to buy a specific product, or contains phrases like "sponsored content," "affiliate link," special discount codes, or testimonials from "satisfied customers" — know that the content is driven by commercial considerations, not necessarily scientific ones.
To safeguard our physical and mental health in the digital space, we need to adopt critical information consumption habits:
● Never take medical advice from social media influencers: Receive guidance only from a licensed medical professional who is familiar with your personal medical history.
● Verify information against authoritative sources: Come across a viral health trend? Check it on reputable medical websites, health fund portals, or the Ministry of Health. Then consult your family doctor about whether it is safe for you. Don't rush to apply all kinds of miracle ointments or wash your hair with a wonder shampoo. At best it won't work; in other cases it can land you in hospital.
● Beware of "self-appointed experts": Avoid relying on influencers who lack formal medical training, or those whose medical license has been revoked for misconduct. Look into what financial interest may be behind their content.
● Do not share information you haven't verified: Sharing false or conspiratorial posts — even with good intentions of warning friends — only helps the algorithm spread the fake news further. If the information contradicts accepted medical guidelines, stop and do not hit the share button.
The epidemic of medical disinformation is not an inevitable fate, but rather the product of a broken and exploitable technological system. While developers of AI tools are trying to find ways to detect and block dangerous content, the development of technologies such as bots and deepfakes only amplifies the scale of the problem and makes it harder to distinguish reality from fiction.
It is time to stop treating social media as an innocent mirror of society. It is a powerful megaphone — and when that megaphone amplifies false hopes and destructive conspiracies over authentic science, the price is counted in human lives. Rebuilding trust in evidence-based medicine requires systemic change and strict regulation of tech giants. Until that long-awaited systemic change arrives, however, the responsibility lies in our own hands: to be skeptical, to ask the right questions, to refuse to buy into superficial magic solutions, and to entrust our health only to real professionals.
