We tend to think of the ketogenic diet as a modern trend born in Silicon Valley or just another passing Instagram diet. But the truth is that the roots of this approach are planted deep in medical history, more than a hundred years back. In the 1920s, doctors were looking for a solution for children who suffered from epilepsy. They noticed that a complete fast stopped the seizures, but naturally, you can't require children not to eat at all over time. In the first weeks, the body undergoes a withdrawal and adjustment process that can be difficult and has been dubbed the "keto flu." Symptoms sometimes include heavy fatigue, dizziness, temporary worsening of brain fog, muscle cramps, and even temporary headaches. The phenomenon is caused, among other things, because the drop in insulin causes the body to lose fluids and along with them critical minerals and electrolytes.

Additionally, it's important to remember that a strict ketogenic diet is not suitable for everyone. People with rare metabolic disorders, problems with liver function, gallbladder disease, or pregnant women — need to act with great caution.

The ketogenic diet provides a fascinating glimpse into how a change of "fuel" can affect our neurological function, but it is certainly not a miracle cure, and it is not suitable or necessary for every person.
