''After making Aliyah, I was referred Dr. Samer Khatib by the Maccabi ophthalmologist, Dr. T. Weinberg. We were living in Hashmonaim at the time. Dr. Kharib more than lived up to her enthusiastic recommendation. He is a highly knowledgabke & skilled physician, a special, caring human being, and he keeps current with the scientific and clinical literature. I know this because he told me of a paper that he had just read, about 3 years ago, documenting the efficacy of a novel, dual action drug for AMD, called Vabysmo, that he felt would be especially useful in my difficult case. Although it was not in the סל (basket) of covered AMD medications, and never used before, Dr. Khatib wrote a very supportive letter to the distributor of Vabysmo, and I was the first Hadassah patient to receive Vabysmo. It worked better that either unitary action drug (Avastin and Eylea) used previously,in Canada and in Israel, making improvements in my fragile macular tissue. Last week, Dr. Khatib performed a surgical procedure to remove a very thick cataract that had deprived me of all meaningful visual acuity in my longstanding AMD eye. When the bandage eas removed following the surgery, my vision was better than it had been in a decade, with colors much brighter that I recall ever. There was only minor waviness due to the AMD and the floaters that I previously had were still present, but a fraction of their former size. Dr. Khatib's talents as a surgeon are very impressive to me.
One final note. We moved from Hashmonaim to Nahariya in February, 2024. I decided, despite the travel diffuculties (just over 3 hours each way door-to-door) involved, via train & light rail, to maintain Dr. Khatib as my retinologist because of my trust in him as a physician, and as a person.
In summary, Dr. Samer Khatib is, in my judgement, based on my extensive and varied clinical experiences with him, and observation of the positive quality of his interactions with his other patients, an ideal physician and I thank G-d for providing me with Dr. Khatib as my retinologist.
