I came to him regarding cochlear implants in both ears.
Before the surgery, he was welcoming, patient, and detailed every aspect I inquired about. Including statistics, recall cases, risks. And he gained my trust immediately. Even before anesthesia, he was wonderful and reassuring, and made sure to remove his mask so I could understand his words as I read lips, and asked his surgery partners to do the same. Now I've undergone another surgery with him (I was only willing with him) for an implant in my second ear, and again I encountered his professional behavior, human warmth, and thorough work.
This time the surgery took longer because he wanted to preserve my remaining hearing and carefully connected each nerve to the implant electrode. Communication specialists expert in implants, Shifa Dahalla and Mona (from Medel agency) also participated in the surgery, and everyone was fascinated by the procedure he performed there.. He made sure to come daily for check-ups. Patiently answered questions and guided comprehensive and dedicated care. I returned home and after 11 days, fluid leaked from one of the wounds. I photographed it for Dr. Mauricio and was asked to report immediately to the hospital, that he was waiting for me and to be prepared for hospitalization. I came and he, with endless dedication, took a culture, sent us to the ER where an ENT doctor was waiting for us, who received us and together with us entered the infectious disease doctor, explained to her in detail the course of the surgery and findings, and was in constant phone contact with Dr. Mauricio. I was hospitalized for 10 days because Dr. Mauricio did not compromise for a moment on less than 200%. He took no risks, personally instructed doctors working under him regarding me, came to visit at least once a day and on weekends, being Sabbath-observant, sent colleagues to photograph the wound condition for him. He involved 2 plastic surgeons, 3 infectious disease specialists and sent each of them separately for an independent opinion. He carefully examined 3 antibiotics and did not let it go until he got the desired result.
In his work, there is only holiness, no mundane.
When I came yesterday for a check-up and he was talking to me while a nurse was photographing the ear, I mentioned that I don't understand his words without seeing lips. He came in front of me and bent down so I could understand.
The greatness of Dr. Mauricio Cohen-Weiser's soul, his humanity, compassion, humor, humanity, and above all his professionalism in all aspects, are what make him, in my eyes, the best doctor I've ever known.
