While in the past options were limited and nearly all specialists were men, today the reality is changing, and the choice is yours.

## **Why Do Women Prefer Female Gynecologists?**

In recent years, a clear trend has emerged: more and more women, especially younger ones, are actively seeking female gynecologists. This demand sometimes creates longer wait times for female doctors compared to their male colleagues. But what drives this?

### **Biological Solidarity and Shared Experience**

The strongest argument in favor of female gynecologists is identification. When you complain to a female doctor about debilitating period cramps, discomfort during IUD insertion, or physical sensations during pregnancy – you know that the person sitting across from you understands this experience "from the inside."

This is especially critical for women who have experienced sexual assault. In such situations, a male presence in an intimate and compulsory situation (like a medical exam) may trigger trauma. A female doctor is often perceived as a safer space.

There is a widespread feeling among patients that with female doctors, it's easier to have a dialogue that is less paternalistic. The conversation tends to be more "sister to sister" and less "medical authority to patient."

## **Why Do Some Women Prefer Male Gynecologists?**

Despite the trend, many women are still treated by male gynecologists and are highly satisfied. Why is that?

### **Availability and Experience**

Due to the history of medicine, where men dominated the field for decades, many of the most senior gynecologists, department heads, and the most renowned specialists are men. If you need a specialist for a specific fertility issue or a complex surgery, you may prefer experience and seniority over gender. Additionally, due to the high demand for female doctors, wait times for male gynecologists are often significantly shorter.

### **"He's More Gentle"**

Paradoxically, many women report that male gynecologists tend to be gentler during the physical exam. The psychological explanation is that a male doctor knows he is "invading" territory that isn't his, and he is aware that he cannot feel what you feel. Therefore, he may take extra care not to cause pain. In contrast, a female doctor may (in some cases, certainly not always) feel that "it's not so bad, they did it to me too," and be slightly more matter-of-fact and less sensitive to pain. ### **Authority and Professionalism**

There are women, often from the older generation but not exclusively, who still perceive the male figure as more authoritative and professional. For them, gender is not an emotional factor – they are looking for whoever will provide the best medical solution, regardless of sex.

## **The History of the Female Body in Medicine**

To understand the depth of this dilemma, one cannot ignore the history. Gynecology is a unique medical field. Most of the time, you visit a gynecologist not because you're sick, but to manage natural life conditions: contraception, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause.

In the 19th century, medicine viewed women as "the opposite of men" – creatures prone to weakness, hysteria, and diseases related to the uterus and ovaries. Doctors (men) took ownership of the female body, sometimes using practices that seem horrifying to us today.

In Israel, there is an additional layer: demographic and national pressure. The myth of "be fruitful and multiply," the trauma of the Holocaust, and the security situation turned the Israeli womb into a "national asset." The doctor was perceived not only as a caregiver but as someone responsible for the continuity of the people.

This history created complex power dynamics. A male doctor who "educates" a patient on how to maintain her pregnancy or when to have children is seen today by many women as inappropriate and outdated. The shift to female gynecologists is part of a process of "reclaiming ownership" of the female body, and the desire to see medicine as a partnership rather than a hierarchy.

For many women in Israel, the preference for a female doctor is not just a matter of comfort, but a religious-cultural necessity. Women from the ultra-Orthodox or traditional Muslim communities are often halachically or culturally prohibited from being in a closed room with a male stranger (yichud), or physical exposure in front of a man is considered taboo. In these cases, the healthcare system is required to provide gender-appropriate solutions to allow these women to receive proper medical care without compromising their beliefs.

## **Gynecology Is Becoming More Female**

If you feel there is a shortage of available female doctors, the good news is that the situation is changing rapidly. In hospitals across the country, the percentage of female residents in gynecology is steadily increasing. In many departments, the ratio between male and female residents is already equal, or even tilting in favor of women. This means that in a decade or two, the question "male or female" will be far less relevant in terms of availability, and the choice will be simpler and more accessible.

## **How Should You Choose a Gynecologist?**

Instead of relying solely on gender, we suggest you evaluate your next doctor based on the following parameters:

1. **Chemistry and Communication:** Does he/she listen to you? Do you feel comfortable asking "silly" questions? Is there eye contact? An empathetic man is better than an impatient woman, and vice versa.

2. **Sense of Security During the Exam:** During your first exam, pay attention – do they explain what they're going to do before doing it? Do they respect your privacy (curtain, cover)?

3. **Area of Specialization:** If you suffer from endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, or need a systems scan – specific expertise matters more than gender. Look for the specialist in your particular issue.

4. **Recommendations:** The wisdom of the crowd (or the wisdom of friends) is worth gold. Ask friends with a similar style to yours.

5. **Availability:** Sometimes, health can't wait. If you have an urgent issue, an available and good doctor is better than an excellent female doctor who won't be free for another three months.

It is only natural that women prefer female gynecologists over male ones. On the other hand, automatically disqualifying male doctors may prevent you from accessing excellent, attentive, and gentle physicians.
